Governors Island Phase 1 and The Hills
New York, New York
Jamie Maslyn Larson was West 8’s Principal-in-Charge for the eight-year long project, leading a complex team through the $140M design and implementation phases. The park offers a world apart from New York City, an extraordinary vantage point on the Harbor, and the chance to experience the sensations of a green Island surrounded by water and sky.
Governors Island’s new park spaces transformed this former military base into a public space destination, which serves as the catalyst and driver for ongoing redevelopment of the Island. The park was implemented in two phases: a 30-acre park and a 10-acre landmark destination called The Hills. Because this project integrates leisure, infrastructure, multiple phases and redevelopment, the park exemplifies contemporary landscape architectural approaches.
The project has won dozens of design awards and has been featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times, New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, Crain’s New York Business, Topos, Metropolis, Architectural Record, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Barrons, The Architect’s Newspaper, Curbed, Slate, and others.
