Lake View Modern Residence, Burlington, VT

Located in Burlington, Vermont’s Hill Section, this contemporary home occupies a site that both backs up to a densely-wooded slope and, looks out onto a sweeping view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Three intimate outdoor rooms accompany three levels of vertically-stacked living space, defined by boardform concrete walls and simple but lush plantings. A ‘painterly’ entry terrace in irregular bluestone slabs framed by groundcover leads to the front door, and an outdoor sculpture here, hints at the presence of the owner’s art collection indoors. An intimate bluestone terrace on the private living level includes a plunge pool, a seating area and fire pit oriented toward spectacular views of the lake. The majority of the lot is maintained with care as a naturalized landscape, absorbing all of the property’s stormwater plus any run-off from the slope above, and providing habitat for birds and small mammals, including a multi-generational family of foxes.
