middlebury college bicentennial hall, middlebury, vermont

The new science building, located on a prominent ridge along the northwest edge of campus, extends the fabric of the traditional campus, creating an edge to the north quad while maintaining dramatic views to the west. In the Discovery Court, bold datums expressed as native Vermont stone seatwalls derive their cadence from the building’s column spacing. These walls are metaphors of Vermont and gesture to the views to the west. A grove of white birch create a dappled canopy overlay providing an inviting gathering place.
