Dorset West Modern, Dorset, VT

Located atop a ridge on the site of a historic farm, this modern family residence was carefully sited to take advantage of picturesque Southern Vermont views. WHLA worked closely with the architect and owner to develop a master plan for this sprawling 114 acre property just outside the village inspired by the original farm. The master plan includes the main house, pool house, tennis court, pond, barn, entry drive and gate, trails, and future guest houses nestled amongst the existing fields, hardwood stands, orchards, natural springs, and stone walls. Taking cues from the architecture of the home, the landscape grounds the main house to the site. A large existing ash tree anchors the auto court where a gracious reclaimed granite walk welcomes visitors and connects to the tennis court. The lines of the main house are extended to the south stepping down to the pool terrace, which seamlessly adjoins to the pool house. The house sits on a plinth defined by local dry laid stone walls. To the east lawn steppers lead to a wood burning fire pit nestled into the hillside with quintessential views of the mountains beyond. At the fire pit the Danby marble mantle from the original farmhouse was carefully preserved and integrated into the corten log holder. To the west outdoor rooms are defined by the geometry of the house including a garden area with raised corten planters, spa, outdoor grilling area, and play lawn.  Entry walls and a minimal metal gate inspired by the agrarian history of the area form a threshold to property. The house is anchored by large mature native trees placed to frame views and create a sense of timelessness. The house and landscape draw on the history of the site creating a powerful sense of place evoking the historic agrarian landscape of Vermont.
