Lakepoint Residence, Shelburne Point, VT

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, this family residence was sited to take advantage of spectacular water views and the Adirondacks beyond. WHLA worked closely with the owners and the architect to develop a master plan for this expansive property on Shelburne Point. The master plan includes the main house, a guest cottage adjacent the water, barn, and future sports amenities around the property. Over time views to the lake had been diminished, WHLA worked closely with an arborist to selectively edit invasive vegetation and limb-up mature existing trees to open the understory views. Taking cues from the architecture of the home, the landscape grounds the main house on the site. Guests arrive at the auto court where a gracious bluestone walk and gardens welcome visitors. Adjacent the solarium, the lines of the house are extended to the south creating a patio that overlooks the lake and steps that lead down a lush, planted slope to the lower level. To the west, at the lower-level spacious outdoor rooms including a pool, spa, putting green, and shade structure for outdoor dining take advantage of water views. A generous pastoral lawn rolls down to a private beach and a wood burning fire pit alongside the lake. The main house and guest cottage are anchored by large native trees strategically placed to frame views and provide a sense of timelessness. Entry walls and a minimal metal gate inspired by the agrarian history of the area form a threshold to property.  Drifts of native perennials, grasses and shrubs create an elegant composition that ground the home and define spaces for family gathering, entertaining and quiet reflection.
