South Hero Modern, South Hero, VT

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, this contemporary home was sited to take advantage of the water views and the surrounding agrarian landscape. WHLA worked closely with the owners and the architect to develop a master plan for this 12.6-acre parcel in South Hero, Vermont. The interconnected gable structures of the main house frame four unique outdoor spaces, each intended for a specific purpose. At the auto court, large-scale natural stone slabs complement the architecture and lead to the covered entrance. In the courtyard, a carefully composed staggered bluestone walk leads through bands of low textural planting and birch trees to the front entrance. An intimate outdoor living space facing the lake includes a dining area, fire table, lawn, and grill. A generous lawn and meadow with large native trees extend to the west capturing views of the pastoral landscape. The master plan also includes the location of a phase two cabin adjacent the water’s edge.
