Salem State University Viking Hall, Salem, Massachusetts

Viking Hall adds 350 beds to campus as wells as a large public flex space that serves as a Starbucks by day and an event / performance space by night.  The two wings of the building, connected by a glassy bridge create new open spaces on campus.  The front green is a new public face for the campus along Loring Avenue while an interior courtyard provides exterior commons space for residents.  The paving of the plaza extends the geometry of the façade out into the landscape while sculptural “twig” benches provide casual seating.  Tables and chairs extends the coffee shop to the exterior allowing for an active streetscape adjacent to the entry.
